Let the EMBA surprise you

“Challenge the future. You are the ones who are going to make the difference. You are the ones who have to show that another future is possible. Here at ESADE, we want to generate this change with you.” This was how Jordi Brunat, Director of ESADE Executive Education, welcomed new participants to the monthly Executive MBA (EMBA) on Welcome Day. “Be positive, courageous and daring, but above all, keep your mind open. You cannot even imagine where you will be 10 years from now.”

With these words, a new class of students, 40% of whom are women, embarked on the EMBA journey. “We are very proud of this figure and we want it to keep increasing,” commented Esteve Mogas, Director of the EMBA. “This is a change that all of us must be involved in.”

During the welcome session, the new participants shared their reasons for undertaking this new adventure: “We are here to start a new life,” said one student; the rest of the class responded with a round of applause. Indeed, the EMBA is synonymous with change. The new participants are about to encounter endless possibilities and new horizons, both professionally and personally. “Let the EMBA surprise you,” said Mr. Mogas during his remarks.

The new participants also had the chance to share their concerns about this new journey with participants who were in the same situation one year ago. “Here you’ll find time to reflect: Who are you? What kind of leader do you want to be? You only get to do an MBA once in a lifetime, so take a deep breath and enjoy it!” commented Aurora Martínez, a representative of last year’s graduating class.

Daniel, also from last year’s class, stressed the importance of the group’s support: “One of the key points of the EMBA is that you are united as a class. This adventure is also about building personal and professional relationships.” “You’re here to learn from each other,” added Aurora. “Don’t be afraid. Get out of your comfort zone and make mistakes!” challenged Daniel.

Indeed, the EMBA is quite a challenge. The new participants understand this, but they also know that hard work will bring them great rewards. “New professional opportunities”, “creating my own business”, “having a transformational experience”, “learning from my colleagues”, “building a great group” and “growing together” – these were just some of the reflections shared during Welcome Day.

Finally, we would like to pass on the words of encouragement and gratitude that Mr. Mogas shared at the end of the event: “Thank you for being here today. Thank you for your excitement and energy. Thank you for your trust in ESADE and welcome to the new Executive MBA class of 2017-2019!”

ESADE’s Executive MBA intake sets new records: students from 25 nations, 40% women

Four out of every ten students in the latest intake for ESADE’s monthly-format Executive MBA (EMBA) in English are women. This is ten per cent higher than female participation in this kind of programme worldwide (30.1%), according to the 2017 Executive MBA Council Survey. The survey includes ESADE among the 11 business schools that — as shown in the latest Financial Times ranking — have EMBA programmes in which women make up over 35% of the student body.

The 40 participants in the latest edition of ESADE’s EMBA programme are drawn from 25 countries from around the world. Each speaks an average of four languages and 60% come from abroad. Their academic backgrounds vary, the main ones being: Economics or Business (55%); Engineering (13%); Law and Humanities (13%); Sciences (5%). With regard to the sectors represented by students taking ESADE EMBA programmes, the principal fields are: Energy; Finance and Insurance; Technology and Telecommunications; Consulting; Aeronautics; Health Care; Public Sector. With regard to the functional areas in which students work, Marketing, Sales, Operations, General Management, and Finance are the most strongly represented.

The proportion of female professionals making up ESADE’s intake for the latest edition of the Executive MBA (EMBA) is ten per cent higher than the world average (30.1%) for this kind of programme.The part-time programme is imparted in English on the Barcelona and Madrid campuses and lasts 16 months. Participants have an average of ten years’ professional experience.

ESADE and its commitment to women’s talent

The high percentage of women in ESADE’s EMBA (40%) and in the rest of the School’s programmes (43%) is the result of a firm commitment to gender balance and female leadership. ESADE was the first Spanish business school to join The United Nations’ #HeForShe platform and since 2013, it is an academic partner in Proyecto Promociona para Mujeres en la Alta Dirección [Women for Senior Management Project], an initiative fostered and carried out by Instituto de la Mujer y para la Igualdad de Oportunidades [Institute for Women & Equal Opportunities] and the CEOE [Spanish business organisation]. Almost 400 women have already taken the programme.

Furthermore, ESADE periodically carries out surveys such as the ESADE Gender Monitor and Mujeres con Impacto [Women Who Make a Difference]. Over the last year, the School has supported many projects, such as the publication ‘37 almas en una’ [37-in-1], a collective essay based on the stories of 37 women managers who tell how their personal and professional experiences contribute to female leadership. These and many other initiatives, such as The MBA Women in Business Club, won Joint First Prize in the EJE&CON ‘Gender-Free Talent’ Award, together with the scientist Margarita Salas, the firms PwC and Atrevia, and the magazine Capital Humano [Human Capital]. Eugenia Bieto, ESADE’s Director-General, is the first woman to be appointed President of the CEMS Global Alliance and is one of the few women heading a world-class business school.

Congratulations, Executive MBA class of 2017!

The graduation ceremony of the Executive MBA class of ‘17 was held in late April.

Whenever the programme ends, both the students and the faculty members involved in their education have mixed feelings. On the one hand, they are enormously pleased about everything they have achieved, the growth they have experienced at all levels, and the excitement of a new phase in life; on the other hand, they are somewhat sad about leaving behind a group that has contributed to the personal and professional development of each participant, and about the end of an era that marked a turning point in their lives.

As class representatives Kseniya and Don confessed, the 45 participants, with their diverse range of backgrounds, profiles and objectives, “started out as a class of students and ended up like family”.

That just about says it all. Congratulations to all of you, and I hope these months are just the beginning of a lifetime of successes and achievements, both personal and professional.

#beachanger: How the EMBA Transforms You Professionally and Personally

What do these concepts – which attract us as much as they scare some of us – have in common? Change. They all arise from a change, a decision, a transformative act that opens up paths that you had never before imagined. New experiences that, once you’ve had them, you are very grateful for.

And you know what? These are the responses that our EMBA students gave when we asked them what ESADE’s Executive MBA meant to them. These are the opinions of our changers. But now it’s time for others to form part of this transformation, which begins in one person and expands throughout the community.

What is #beachanger?

Our changers talk about drivers of change, personal development, catalysts, and how the EMBA has given them the personal and educational tools they needed to cope with changes in their careers that many of them had dreamed of but didn’t know how to bring to life. The professionals who take the EMBA acquire a renewed sense of security and confidence as a result of gaining new knowledge and sharing business ideas and experiences with their peers and professors.

For these professionals, the EMBA is a holistic change that affects them and their companies. And the companies, in turn, value and cultivate the participants’ new capabilities. That’s how you create a cycle of positive feedback and growth that benefits both parties.

Many people simply see change, but not our EMBA students. They want to be change. And they are. They are changers who, from day one, want to be involved in transformations that they believe in and are passionate about.

QS Scholarship Winner: IT Consultant Hits Refresh on Career with ESADE

Gaurav Jain spent more than a decade working as a process management consultant assisting technology companies in India and Denmark in their attempts to get more ‘lean’. Now, a newfound perspective has led him to pursue an executive MBA as he seeks to bring about a career change. His aim is to become an entrepreneur who strives to help society as a whole function more efficiently and sustainably. Because of Gaurav’s efforts to date in this pursuit, working with various NGOs, he has been awarded a QS Community Scholarship, valued at US$2,000, which will go toward his ESADE executive MBA, the next step towards his future as a change maker.

A father of two daughters, Gaurav spent years building a successful career in IT. Over the years, however, his daily commute in urban centers of Pune and Kolkata, India, exposed him to a different kind of problem: One concerned with social issues, rather than the business operations that he handled daily in his work at IBM.

“Every day, from home to the office and back,” Gaurav reflects, “I was seeing kids on the side of the road who will never have the same starting opportunities as my daughters, because they don’t have any access to quality education.” Inspired by this realization – that missing this crucial aspect in one’s upbringing could mean, “getting on the wrong trajectory in life” – Gaurav began to turn his efforts towards helping underprivileged children.

Gaurav identified Akanksha Foundation, a local charity that helps Indian children with English language skills and was intending to donate money to its cause. However, he quickly learned that giving time – rather than money – would have more impact. Starting out as a volunteer teacher, his personal goal to help children in India “get a few steps closer to an equal starting line in life,” increasingly began to inform his professional aspirations. When he transferred to IBM’s Copenhagen office, he continued volunteering for an organization with similar aims, called Action Child Aid. However, this international move had much bigger implications on his career trajectory than a simple office change or new volunteer engagement. It inspired Gaurav to reevaluate the social impact of his work. “There is always a point in your career where you feel stagnant, and want to do more than just the job,” he adds.

International exposure key to solving problems innovatively, says Gaurav

Gaurav’s experience working between two continents has given him a newfound perspective on both his career and his life purpose. “I think studying and working in different places definitely opens your mind to think differently – and innovatively – about situations and ways of resolving a problem,” he says. Gaurav’s international exposure emboldened him to think more globally and contextualize his professional capacity within larger social issues. “My international exposure and living in different places really helped me become more open and think more about problems prevailing in society,” Gaurav explains. In examining ways in which he could apply his existing skills in a more meaningful way, he reflected on his career in IT and decided it was time for a career change – or rather, a reboot – towards becoming a social entrepreneur. Having identified gaps in his own skillset, he then decided that it was time to get more formal business training. It was time for an MBA.

Family Day

Those of us taking the 2015 fortnightly EMBA programme attended Family Day this weekend. During the event, a member of each student’s family could attend a lecture similar to those given during the programme. This let family members experience ESADE teaching methods (case studies, ‘learning by doing’ and so on) for themselves.

During Family Day, we EMBA students were in our usual classroom, following the programme while family members were sampling new knowledge and learning (which on this occasion was Marketing-based and involved classwork and discussion of real cases).

We swapped impressions of this initiative and got the chance to meet other participants’ family during the break and the cocktails served after the classes. Here, one should note that family support is vital for students taking this intensive programme. We are immensely grateful to families for their support and everlasting patience.

“The Experience Learning Programme” – an intense experience at Món Sant Benet

It is hard to briefly summarise the nature of the experience of the stay at Món Sant Benet. The Outdoor Experience Learning Programme marks a watershed in our EMBA studies. From the standpoint of leadership and self-leadership, the programme is an initiation in personal and social management under changing conditions. The nature of the change may be personal, professional, or even corporate. Working together to deal with changes of various kinds helped us strengthen relations and improve teamwork.

 Emotions’, ‘change’, ‘revelation’, ‘enthusiasm’, ‘improvement’, ‘feelings’, ‘help’, ‘a boost’, ‘tranquillity’, ‘enjoyment’, ‘creativity’, ‘discovery’, ‘overcoming hurdles’.

These are just some of the terms participants used to sum up in a few words what the programme meant to them.

It is hard to return to the daily grind after this experience in such an idyllic setting yet one has to make the most of every waking moment. The daily routine takes up most of our time and makes us lose touch with what is really important. That is why we are often loathe to stray off the beaten track or to face the need for change. Such shortcomings are part of human nature but we can overcome them with enthusiasm, initiative and determination.
